In the previous article, I have described basic level information about SharePoint Introduction, SharePoint Web Application in context of SharePoint Online and SharePoint On-Premises and Site Collections in terms of SharePoint Online and SharePoint On Premises. So, in this article, I am moving one more step ahead. I will be talking about SharePoint Sub Sites in terms of SharePoint Online and SharePoint On Premises.
In this article, I am going to cover following topics,
- Introduction to Subsites
- Creating Subsites in SharePoint On-Premises and SharePoint Online
Introduction to Subsites
We have seen that SharePoint has many main components such as Web Application, Site Collections. The next key point in SharePoint components is SharePoint Subsites. SharePoint subsites are the sites created under any SharePoint Site Collection. In other words, if we have to define the SharePoint subsites, then everyone will have their own definition. I will define SharePoint subsites as “The SharePoint site which has Site Collection as a parent site or any other site as a parent site then it is called as SharePoint subsites”.
Let’s understand this with the below-given image.
Here Subsite-1 and Subsite-2 are the SharePoint Subsites as it has the parent of this subsites as a subsite or Site Collection. One fact about SharePoint Site Collection and SharePoint Subsites is SharePoint Site Collection cannot contain a parent site as SharePoint Site Collection or a Site Collection cannot contain any Sub Site Collection. Site collection will be always created at the root level of SharePoint Web Application.
Creating subsite in SharePoint On-Premises and SharePoint Online

And select site template.
Please enter following information also.
Here if you want to inherit the permission from the top-level site then select “Use same permissions as parent site. If you want to redefine the new Permission then select “User Unique Permissions”.
If you want to use the quick launch from parent site then select yes, or you want to redefine the quick launch the use No.
If you want to use the top link bar from parent site then select yes, or you want to redefine the top navigation then use No.
Then click on Create button. Once you click on Create; the subsite will be created.
SharePoint subsite in SharePoint Online and SharePoint On-Premises is same in terms of terminology conceptually. So in this article, we have seen SharePoint subsites, the creation of Subsites.
